Third Chapter Volunteer Deploys to Miami During Very Busy Weekend
Monday, February 8, 2010American Red Cross of the Heartland disaster relief volunteer Emily Barr of Bloomington left for Miami on Saturday, February 6. She is based at the relief headquarters along with Lynn Willard and Peg Shipley, chapter volunteers who deployed the previous weekend to support people who have been relocated from Haiti.
Emily is deployed for twelve days as a Disaster Mental Health Services Supervisor. Her role includes supervision of assigned Disaster Mental Health Associates, mental health screenings, crisis intervention, and management of referrals.
As Emily was leaving, additional American Red Cross of the Heartland volunteers and staff were experiencing one of the busiest stretches in chapter history. Volunteers assisted people impacted by four local family fires and one structure fire in a fourteen hour period. Two fires in Bloomington and one each in rural McLean, Fairbury, and Pontiac kept chapter volunteers busy meeting the immediate, basic needs of twelve people displaced by the fires and feeding responders at the structure fire.
All of this aid is free and made possible by the generous financial contributions received every day at the chapter.
