The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross of the Heartland
Helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergency situations.

Our Services
The American Red Cross has nearly 2,800 chapters located throughout the United States. More than 1.1 million volunteers and 23,000 paid staff members help people prevent, prepare for and cope with emergencies in their communities. 2007 year in review slideshow.

Each year, we respond to more than 50,000 disasters, ranging from a home destroyed by fire to hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. Our staff and volunteers help hundreds of thousands of people by providing free food, clothing and shelter. Other links to disaster related sites are: www.disasterrelief.org and www. fema.gov.

Health and Safety Training
Nationally we certify an average of seven million people a year in Red Cross health and safety courses, which include CPR, first aid, lifeguard training, and swimming.

HIV/AIDS Education
The Red Cross staff works in collaboration with the U.S. Public Health Service and other agencies to provide millions of Americans with AIDS education.

Blood Donation & Collection
The American Red Cross is the largest provider of blood, plasma, and tissue products in the United States. In McLean County, Red Cross blood collections are processed through the Heart of America Region in Peoria, IL. The blood is tested, processed and distributed back to the two local hospitals, BroMenn Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center. Giving blood is easy, safe and takes less than an hour. Donate today by visiting one of our upcoming
blood drives.

International Social Services
The American Red Cross in conjuction with the International Committee of the Red Cross and sister societies provides tracing services and message passing when familes have been separated due to a disaster or armed conflict. In addition, the American Red Cross operates the Holocaust and War Victims Tracing and Information Center in Baltimore, MD. These services are available at any local Red Cross Chapter.
