Volunteer Opportunities

Babysitter's Training Instructor - Teaches the six-hour American Red Cross Babysitter's Training course to individuals ages 11 to 15. This Babysitter's Training course provides participants with the information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or guardians. Skills taught include feeding a baby, diapering, choking and first aid.

Requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years of  age
  • Complete the Babysitter's Training Instructor course(14 hours in  length)
  • Good communication skills
  • Enjoy working with youth ages 11 to 15

Local Disaster CoordinatorCarries a cell phone designated for all disaster calls for an assigned 7 day period, answering all calls that come in during after hours (defined as 4:30 PM to 8:30 AM Monday—Friday and all of Saturday and Sunday). Responds to all calls that come in, coordinating volunteers to respond. Secures food for canteen from vendors. 

Requirements:

  • Willingness to allow an emergency call to disrupt personal life or sleep
  • Good communication skills
  • Completion of Introduction to Disaster Services, Mass Care, and one hour training on responding to calls

Disaster Health Services TechnicianAssists disaster victims & meeting their disaster related medical needs.

Requirements:

  • Current license as an RN, PA, LPN, LVN, EMT or Physician
  • Completion of Introduction to Disaster Services & Disaster Health Services I & II

Disaster Leadership PositionsServes in various leadership roles in local and/or national disasters.

Requirements:

  • Management & supervisory experience
  • Completion of Introduction to Disaster Services and other trainings, depending on role

Health Fair VolunteerRepresents the Red Cross at community & health fairs by manning Red Cross display & distributing information.

Requirements:

  • Enjoys working with the public

Presenter for Children's Safety Programs Conducts activities in schools and after school programs for youth, teaching them different safety topics such as what to do in a disaster, basic first aid and pool safety.

Requirements:

  • Daytime availability
  • Good communication skills
  • Creativity
  • Enjoys working with kids

Blood Recruitment Assistant—Makes reminder calls to donors who have appointments to donate as well as calls to regular blood and pheresis donors to schedule them to give when they become eligible.

Requirements:

  • Good communication skills
  • Orientation to call procedures
  • Ability to answer questions about the blood donation process or provide toll free number, if unable to answer questions. (Training on donation process provided).

Office Assistant - Answers phones while office manager is at lunch or at other times as neede.Greets and assists visitors as they come in. Assists with miscellaneous projects such as mailings and labeling of pamphlets.
